Q: How do I dispose of treated wood?
At this time, one generally can dispose of treated wood along with other municipal or construction waste that is collected and disposed of in landfills. However, local and state regulations should be verified as to any limitations on disposal of treated wood. Treated wood must not be burned in open fires or in stoves, fireplaces, or residential boilers, because toxic chemicals may be produced as part of the smoke and ashes. Treated wood from commercial and industrial use (for example, construction sites) may be burned only in commercial or industrial incinerators or boilers in accordance with state and federal regulations. Reuse of treated wood in a manner that is consistent with the original intended end use of the treated wood is generally permitted. The industry publication "Management of Used Treated Wood Products" addresses some of the legal questions regarding the disposal and reuse of treated wood.
